Asbestos Information
Asbestos is a generic term used for the 6 types of legally identifiable mineral fibre types that are asbestiform.
There are 1 serpantine and 5 amphibole mineral types of asbestos. They are:
1. Chrysotile (white), Serpentine
2. Amosite (brown), Amphibole
3. Crocidolite (blue/ grey), Amphibole
4. Anthrophyllite (white), Amphibole
5. Actinolite (green/ grey), Amphibole
6. Tremolite (white), Amphibole
Most Laboratories will only identify the first 3 and are not equiped to identify the other types. they will report Unknown mineral fibre and this will inturn lead to possible disturbance or removal of an asbestos material by persons that are not aware that it still may contain asbestos.
Tremolite is very common usually as a contaminate in chrysotile.
Under the naked eye most asbestos fibres except crocidolite are white in appearance and not distinguishable as asbetsos until analysed by Polarized Light Miscrocopy with Dispertion staining techniques.
